VETP provides free English conversation lessons for Michigan State University's international students and scholars and their adult family members. VETP classes provide a friendly and relaxed learning environment in which participants can try out their oral English and practice their listening skills. VETP is part of Community Volunteers for International Programs (CVIP), under the Office for International Students and Scholars (OISS) at MSU.
Classes are held at different days and times during the week. See the schedule, below, and choose a time that fits your needs. Please contact the specific tutors of your choice before attending to make sure the class is not already full. Please contact your tutor if you will be absent or wish to discontinue attending the tutoring session. A limited number of individual tutors are available for one-on-one conversation practice and help.
Are you interested in becoming a tutor and being a conversation partner for an international student? Volunteer tutors act as conversation and discussion leaders in small groups ("classes") or one-on-one. Tutors act as guides to the language and culture of the U.S. You do not need to work through a textbook or assign homework. The VETP Director can give you ideas for topics to discuss at each class, or you can ask the students what they'd like to discuss. In the process, you will be modeling correct, naturally spoken English, and giving the student a chance to experience an authentic language exchange.
